About Texas Birder Press

Small Press. Big Passion. Great Stories.

Texas Birder Press was founded on a simple belief:

Good stories deserve to be told.

Whether those stories are about birds, nature, travel, family, adventure, loss, discovery, or simply a life well lived, they deserve the chance to find their readers.

We are an independent publishing company and online bookstore dedicated to helping authors bring their books to life while connecting readers with books they will treasure.

Unlike large publishing houses, we believe publishing should be personal.

You shouldn’t have to navigate a maze of departments, automated emails, and confusing publishing jargon just to share your work with the world.

At Texas Birder Press, you’ll work with real people who care about books, care about authors, and genuinely enjoy helping great ideas become great books.

Meet the Founder

Texas Birder Press was founded by Michael Mathews, an author, naturalist, birder, photographer, workshop instructor, publisher, and lifelong storyteller.

A former biologist and longtime business owner, Michael has spent decades helping people solve problems, build organizations, and bring ideas to life. He is also the founder of TexasBirder.com, one of Texas’s fastest-growing birding communities, where thousands of birders gather to learn, share, and celebrate the birds and wild places they love.

Over the years, Michael has led birding trips across Texas, taught bird photography workshops, written extensively about birds and nature, and published books ranging from practical field guides to poetry exploring love, loss, and life’s many unexpected turns.

Like many of the authors he works with, Michael understands both the excitement and the uncertainty that come with writing a book.

That’s one of the reasons Texas Birder Press exists.

What We Publish

Texas Birder Press specializes in books that educate, inspire, entertain, and connect people with the world around them.

Our interests include:

  • Birding Books
  • Nature Books
  • Wildlife and Conservation
  • Memoirs and Personal Stories
  • Poetry Collections
  • Travel Guides
  • Outdoor Recreation
  • Family Histories
  • Regional Interest Books
  • Fiction and Creative Nonfiction
  • How-To Books

And occasionally books that don’t fit neatly into any category at all.

Those are often the most interesting.

Publishing for Real People

Many publishing companies focus exclusively on experienced authors.

We don’t.

Some of our favorite conversations begin with:

“I’ve always wanted to write a book…”

Many authors arrive with a finished manuscript.

Others arrive with an outline.

Some have a collection of notes.

A few have ideas scribbled on napkins.

All are welcome.

Whether you need editing, formatting, cover design, Amazon KDP assistance, publishing guidance, or simply someone to help you figure out where to begin, we’re here to help.

You keep your copyright.

You keep creative control.

We simply help you transform your ideas into a professional, publishable book.

Our Used Bookstore

In addition to publishing, Texas Birder Press operates an online bookstore specializing in used birding books, nature books, field guides, natural history titles, travel books, and other carefully selected works.

We believe good books should continue finding new readers long after they leave the bookstore shelf.

Some books teach us something.

Some books entertain us.

Some books quietly change our lives.

All deserve another chance to be discovered.

Why We Do This

Because books matter.

Books preserve knowledge.

They capture memories.

They inspire curiosity.

They make us laugh.

They make us think.

They help us understand the world and each other.

And sometimes they arrive at exactly the moment we need them most.

We believe there are countless stories waiting to be told and countless readers waiting to discover them.

Helping bring those two together is both our mission and our privilege.

Let’s Talk

Whether you’re searching for your next favorite book, exploring publishing options, or carrying around a story you’ve always wanted to tell, we’d love to hear from you.

Pull up a chair.

Stay awhile.

Browse the shelves.

Ask questions.

Tell us about your book idea.

And if you’ve got a story to share, let’s bring it to life together.
